On startup, the Linux kernel starts /sbin/init as process 1.
/sbin/init is then responsible to start all further needed programs.

The main configuration file for /sbin/init is /etc/inittab. It
contains references to /etc/rc.d/{boot,powerfail,rc}:
'boot' is executed at system bootup and 'rc' is responsible for
doing a runlevel change.

If you don't want to create the correct symlinks in the
rc?.d subdirectories, you can use 'start.conf' and the
'makelinks' script.
