			README for DCP

The DCP package provides a pair of service libraries for the DCP protocol,
which can be used to coordinate unused cycles on hundreds of Internet
machines in attacks on computation-intensive problems,

As a proof of concept, it also includes code for a trivial ROT13 test
service. It is intended that DCP will support GIMPS (the Great Internet
Mersenne Prime Search).

You can build the software, including a server and a simple
line-oriented client, by doing

	configure --localstatedir=/usr/local/lib/dcp

followed by

	make

The --localstatedir argument (which specifies the directory under
which DCP project databases are kept) can be changed to fit your local
file layout, but it can't be omitted.

To run the server, your inetd.conf will require the following line:

dcp stream tcp nowait root /usr/bin/dcpd	dcpd

and /etc/services will require a line like:

dcp 1588/tcp # DCP distributed computation server

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: This software is nowhere near finished! The server works (and
does fairly sophisticated things with a GDBM database), but the client
library and test client are untested. I simply haven't had time, and
won't in the near future.

The makefile makes a server support library (dcpd.a) a client support
library (dcpc.a), a server with ROT13 and stub GIMPS services (dcpd), and
a simple line-oriented test client (dcpc).

To test the working parts: after making the software, simply run dcpd -i
to test the server. The rest is up to you.

The daemon.c module is working code lightly adapted from my fetchmail
project, not presently used. It's intended to support daemon-mode clients.
