		qps --- visual process manager
				v1.8

(For the impatient: skip to INSTALLING below.)

qps is an X11 version of top or ps, with Motif- or Windows-like interface.

Needed:
	* Linux 2.0 or later,
	  or Solaris 2.6 or later.
	* Qt library 1.40 or later (get it from http://www.troll.no)
	* X11.
	* A C++ compiler.

SMP (multi-cpu) users: Linux 2.0 has a bug that will report erroneous CPU
times. Only the CPU widget in the status bar is affected by this.
Linux 2.2 and Solaris do not have this problem.

This version of qps uses the /proc file system on Linux and Solaris,
and the kstat library on Solaris, and does not require any special
privileges. There is still an ancient version for Solaris 2.5
available, but it must be run as root. Tell me if you are interested
in porting qps to another OS. It shouldn't be too hard, but there would
be minor issues to discuss.

qps is distributed under the GNU General Public License, and comes
with no warranty whatsoever. See the file COPYING for details.

If you like qps, drop me a mail at f91-men@nada.kth.se. If you don't,
tell me why (if I can do anything about it). Feel free to send any
questions, comments, bug reports etc as well, no matter how trivial
--- qps is quite a trivial utility itself. Contributions are welcome,
including cosmetic fixes and pointing out useability problems.

I am especially interested how well it runs on Solaris, since that port
is new and not as well-tested.

INSTALLING

0. Make sure you have Qt 1.40 or later installed. If not, get it from
   ftp://ftp.troll.no or http://www.troll.no

1. Edit the Makefile to reflect your installation of the Qt library,
   include files and meta object compiler (moc). Note that you may have
   to use the same compiler (and compiler options) used to compile Qt,
   due to the the lack of any standards for C++ binaries.

2. make.

3. If it doesn't work, goto 1.

4. Put the qps binary and the qps.1 man page somewhere. Note that qps
   need not (and should not) be setuid root. Strip qps if you want.

5. Enjoy.

If you don't get it to work, if qps crashes or doesn't behave as
expected, mail me (f91-men@nada.kth.se) and I'll se what I can do.

DOCUMENTATION

is contained in the qps.1 man page. To read it without installing it,
say "nroff -man qps.1 | less". A noteworthy option is "-style windows",
which gives a more Windows-like interface, and "-iconic" which starts qps
iconified.
