 1) patch the kernel with the apropriate patches

for example linux-2.4.22-rc2 would require the following steps:
(assumed that all files/patches are in the current directory)

    # tar xjf linux-2.4.21
    # cd linux-2.4.21
    # bzcat ../patch-2.4.22-rc2.bz2 | patch -p1
    # bzcat ../patch-2.4.22-rc2-ctx17a.diff.bz2 | patch -p1
    # patch -p1 <../patch-2.4.22-rc2-ctx17a-vr0.11.diff

 2) configure your kernel (enable the vroot device)

for example if your old .config is available:

    # make oldconfig

    > Virtual Root device support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_VROOT) [N/y/m/?] (NEW) y

 3) build the kernel

    # make dep
    # make bzImage modules

 4) install the kernel

    # make install modules_install

 5) if required, adjust your boot loader, etc.

 6) build the vrsetup tool

    # cd vr-tools-0.xx/
    # make
    # install vrsetup /sbin/vrsetup

 7) if you do not use devfs, you'll have to create the
device nodes for the vroot device by hand

    # mknod /dev/vroot/0 b 4 0
    # mknod /dev/vroot/1 b 4 1
    # mknod /dev/vroot/2 b 4 2
    # ...
