Notes on the MacAnova Users' Gude and Reference Manual

Files manual/manxxxxx.pdf are Acrobat PDF files containing a new edition
of the MacAnova Users' Guide for Version 4.07. These are viewable using
Acrobat Reader, a free ware program available from Adobe (URL
http://www.adobe.com) for various platforms, including Macintosh,
Windows 3.1/95/98/NT and Unix computers. Other computer viewable
formats may be made available as time allows.

This manual replaces all previous manuals although virtually all that is
in the manuals for versions 4.04 and 4.06 is still correct. It includes
information on all features and enhancements as of August 28, 1998

Here is a list of the available files with indications as to what they
cover.

If you have a PDF reader installed, many browsers will automatically
start it up after downloading a PDF filed. Most browsers know that they
must be downloaded in binary mode. If you download them using ftp, be
sure the mode is binary.

Each file is indexed with "bookmarks." You make the index visible by
selecting Bookmarks and Page on the View menu. Click on a bookmark

We welcome comments and corrections on the Users' Guide.

Pre version 4.0x editions of the User's Guide included a reference
chapter with summaries of virtually every command, adapted from the
material provided by the help() command. In the March 1993 edition for
Version 3.11, this required 50 pages and would be much larger for
Version 4.07. In the Users' Guide it has been replaced by a new Chapter
11 which includes the much briefer information on each command provided
by usage().

A separate document, MacAnova Reference Manual, Version 4.12, has been
issued as University of Minnesota School of Statistics Technical Report
#618. It contains most of the provided by help(). The only form this is
available in is a PDF document:
  ftp://ftp.stat.umn.edu/pub/macanova/docs/referenc.pdf.

Like almost all user manuals that make some pretense at providing a
comprehensive description of a complex program, this one can be heavy
going for those with no previous MacAnova experience. For such novices,
as well as for those who have not used MacAnova for a while, there is a
less complete but more accessible document, An Introduction to MacAnova,
Technical Report 600 (revised December 2000) of the University of
Minnesota School of Statistics. It is a brief introduction (about 60
pages) with many examples that gives the basics and gets you up and
running, but leaves out many of the details and advanced features. It
is available in PDF format as
   ftp://ftp.stat.umn.edu/pub/macanova/docs/Intro.pdf
It is up-to-date as of release 3 of MacAnova 4.11. We will update it to
MacAnvova 4.12 as time permits.

A compressed tar file containing MacAnova documentation files, including
all the Users' Guide PDF files is
available as
  ftp://ftp.stat.umn.edu/pub/macanova/docs/docs.tar.gz
