                              Introduction

MacAnova is distributed under the terms of the GNU Public License,
Version 2. See file Copying.txt distributed with MacAnova. The latest
versions of MacAnova may be obtained over the Internet from its home page
   http://www.stat.umn.edu/macanova/

You can get documentation and source code there as well.

See file Readme.txt for information on documentation, starting MacAnova
and features specific to Windows and DOS.

Copying.txt and Readme.txt are installed automatically with MacAnova.

A standard MacAnova installation includes various auxiliary files,
mainly help and macro files and one or more program files for MacAnova
(see Which Platform Do I Want? below).

                        Which Platform Do I Want?

There is a MacAnova platform for Windows (CP) and one for 32 bit DOS (DJ).
Most users install the CP platform. However, if you like to work at the
DOS prompt or like to do statistical computing non-interactively, the DJ
platform is for you. Many users install both the CP and DJ versions.

                        What Files Do You Need?

MacAnova CP and DJ come as installer applications; you execute the
installer and the installer puts the MacAnova files where they belong.
There are several different installers; this lets you pick and choose
the various bits of MacAnova and its documentation that you wish to
install.

The available CP and DJ installers are:
     File name Contents
 1. MV5021CP.EXE Standard Windows (CP) installation
 2. MV5021DJ.EXE Standard 32 bit DOS (DJ) installation (1.6 MB)
 3. MV5021DC.EXE Documentation files for all versions (3.3 MB)
 4. MV5021HT.EXE HTML help files for all versions (1.4 MB)
 5. MV5021EV.EXE All of the above

The numbers in the name refer to version number and release number:
"5011" is version 5.01 release 1.

                        Downloading from the Web

Start at the download page www.stat.umn.edu/macanova/downloadibm.html.
Then follow the links to the desired platform. Right click on the
installer link to download the installer of choice. You may download
the installers to any location, including the desktop.

                           Installing MacAnova

At this stage you should have the installer file(s) on your hard disk.

It is usually recommended that you install a Windows program from within
the Add/Remove Program control panel. Details on this procedure may
vary depending on your version of Windows. In general, you select the
control panel, choose Install, then click Browse. Now find MV5021CP.EXE
or other installer in the file navigation window. Then click on Finish
to start the installer.

In the installer dialog box, you need to specify the name of a folder or
directory where MacAnova should be installed. The default,
C:\Program Files\MacAnova, should already be displayed. If that is OK,
you don't need to change it.

When installation is done, you are asked if you want to read the ReadMe
file. Click on OK if you do or Cancel otherwise. This is one of the
files that will have been installed and can be read later.

The installer will create shortcuts for MacAnova in Folder
Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MacAnova.

Repeat the above process for all MacAnova installers you wish to use.
The installers for documentation and help files don't offer you a chance
to read the Read Me file.

                       What to Do After Installation

You don't need the installers for running MacAnova. You can delete them
or save them for reinstallation if you wish.

In Windows, the installer adds a MacAnova folder to the Programs submenu
of the Start Menu. Select MacAnova and then the specific version you want
to run. If you have installed any documentation files, a shortcut to the
documentation folder is also there. If you have installed the HTML help
files, a link to the index file is also on the menu.

The installers that install the CP will also register three extensions:
.mvsave for MacAnova save files, .mvbat for MacAnova batch files, and
.mvout for MacAnova output files. Double clicking on any files with
these extensions should start Windows MacAnova (and restore the save file,
run the batch file, and/or display the output file).

MacAnova can also be run from the DOS prompt by typing MACANOCP or
MACANODJ when you are in the MacAnova directory or C:\MACANOVA\MACANOVCP
when you are in another directory. (You may need to change the directory
to reflect where you installed MacAnova.)

At the DOS prompt, there are number of command line options you can use.
For example,
     MACANOCP -q -data mydata.txt
suppresses printing the startup "banner" (-q) and sets mydata.txt as the
default data file used by macro getdata. In MacAnova, type
help(launching) in MacAnova for details on such options.

Under some versions of Windows you can also run MacAnova by selecting Run
on the Start menu. Enter, say, "C:\MACANOVA\MACANOCP" to run the CP version.
(Again, the directory should reflect where you installed MacAnova.) You
may also use command line options here.

                            File Manifests

Here are the files included in, or installed by, each of the installers.
Many of these files are installed in a directory called SharedSupport
inside of the program directory.
