                              Introduction

MacAnova is distributed under the terms of the GNU Public License,
Version 2. See file Copying.txt distributed with MacAnova. The latest
versions of MacAnova may be obtained over the Internet from its home
page
   http://www.stat.umn.edu/macanova/

You can get documentation and source code there as well.

See file Readme.msw.txt for information on documentation, starting
MacAnova and features specific to Windows and DOS.

Copying.txt and Readme.msw.txt are installed automatically with MacAnova
in the SharedSupport directory.

A standard MacAnova installation includes two program files (one for
Windows and one for DOS), various auxiliary help and macro files,
all documentation in PDF format, and all help in html (browseable)
format.

                        Which Platform Do I Want?

Most people will want to use MacAnova for Windows interactively (the
windowed forms of MacAnova use the Carapace toolkit and are sometimes
referred to as Carapace, cpc, or cp versions of MacAnova). People who
want to work noninteractively or do production work may wish to use
the DOS version (sometimes called DJ, because of the compiler used to
build it). The installer includes both the cp and dj versions.

                        What Files Do You Need?

MacAnova for Windows and DOS comes as a single installer program; you
execute the installer and the installer puts the MacAnova files where
they belong. The installer will have a name similar to
MacAnova5.04.1.exe, where the numbers reflect versioning (in the
example, version 5.04 release 1).

                        Downloading from the Web

Start at the download page www.stat.umn.edu/macanova/downloadibm.html.
Right click on the installer link to download the installer. You can
save the installer to the desktop or any other convenient location on
your hard disk. That's really all there is to it.

                           Installing MacAnova

At this stage you should have the installer file on your hard disk.

It is usually recommended that you install a Windows program from within
the Add/Remove Program control panel. Details on this procedure may
vary depending on your version of Windows. In general, you select the
control panel, choose Install, then click Browse. Now find the
installer in the file navigation window. Then click on Finish to start
the installer.

In the installer dialog box, you need to specify the name of a folder or
directory where MacAnova should be installed. The default,
C:\Program Files\MacAnova, should already be displayed. If that is OK,
you don't need to change it. It you wish to put MacAnova somewhere else,
you may do so.

When installation is done, you are asked if you want to read the Readme
file. Click on OK if you do or Cancel otherwise. This is one of the
files that will have been installed and can be read later.

The installer will create a MacAnova group on your Start menu with items
for MacAnova for Windows, MacAnova for DOS, and MacAnova Html Help.
(Technically, these menu items are shortcuts for MacAnova in Folder
Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MacAnova.) The installer will also modify
your registry file so that Windows recognizes .mvsave, .mvbat, and .mvout
extensions to be MacAnova files. Files with these extensions should be
used for saved workspaces, batch files, and output. Double clicking on
any files with these extensions should start Windows MacAnova (and
restore the save file, run the batch file, and/or display the output
file).

                       What to Do After Installation

You don't need the installer for running MacAnova. You can delete it
or save it.

In Windows, you may start MacAnova by selecting its item from the Start
menu. You may also access the HTML help files in the same way.

If you work in a command line window (DOS prompt), you can start
MacAnova for Windows with the command macanovacpc. You may need to
preface it with the path. For example, the default path is
C:\Program Files\MacAnova\macanovacpc.exe but you may have chosen
to install MacAnova in a different directory. You may start the
command line version of MacAnova with the command macanova. Again,
you may need to preface the command with the full path.

At the DOS prompt, there are number of command line options you can use.
For example,
     macanovacpc -q -data mydata.txt
suppresses printing the startup "banner" (-q) and sets mydata.txt as the
default data file used by macro getdata. In MacAnova, type
help(launching) for details on such options.

                            File Manifests

Here are the files installed for MacAnova. We use INSTDIR to be a
shortcut for the directory where MacAnova was installed. For example,
the default for INSTDIR is C:\Program Files\MacAnova.

inside of the program directory.
